I remember the first tennis video game I played. Boy was that thing lame yet I spent hours playing it. All you had to do was move your guy to the ball and he would hit it. A typical rally lasted 50 strokes, not very realistic to say the least. Then came the arcade game Virtual tennis which was later ported onto the Dreamcast and PS2 console. That was an awesome game. And in my foggy memory bank, I remember spending several late nights playing some tennis game on N64 with Yv, Vik and Sunil…. that was fun too… I think.

Anyways, none of those games can compare to the new comer, EA Grand Slam Tennis for the Wii. Tennis games and the Wii remote are a match made in heaven and EAGST takes full advantage of that fact. I can list off some bummers (ie graphics, lack of control with the regular Wii remote vs Motion Plus) but they’re overshadowed by the game play and player immersion, making EAGST the best tennis video game I’ve played. What I really like is how they got the movements of the featured players down pat. McEnroe serves like McEnroe. Sampras does his racket twirling thing when he’s returning serve. And Venus Williams grunts like a wild boar feasting on truffles. But the best part? Maria Sharapova is in the game and she’s hot. Naturally. I wish they included Andre or Michael Chang in the game though. That would have sealed the deal in making EAGST the best tennis video game ever known to man.

A cool find courtesy of TL via campingtourist is the sleepwear sleeping bag from Selk. I like their “not so serious” (what’s a better word?) approach on their website to marketing their sleeping bag, although that lends the product to being seen more as a novelty than as a real sleeping bag. But then again, how can you seriously market a yellow body formed sleeping bag without being a bit goofy about it.

I should have done more research into the phone.

With an intro like that, you should suspect that I’m not pleased with Blackberry’s newest smart phone. Granted it’s their first touch screen phone so there’s probably a bunch of kinks to work out, but to deploy a phone with software that is soooooooooo painfully slow is ridiculous. Supposedly the hardware on this thing is badass, but the software has to go mess things up. The previous bb that I had was wonderful. If it weren’t for the cheesy web browser on the thing, I probably would have kept it for another year. The wonderful thing about that phone was that it was lightning quick. Compared to the Storm, the “brick” as I lovingly called it, was a lambo and the Storm is an amputee crawling through the sand with a hundred pound ball and chain tied around it’s neck. I hope bb releases a fix soon or else the Storm is going to find itself underneath my car tires….

* After reading this post again, I realized that I didn’t provide any details about the tortoise like speed of the Storm. On the iPhone, when the screen flips from vertical to horizontal, the motion is fluid and quick. On the Storm, sometimes it’ll take a second for the phone to register that its orientation is different, at which point it stops to gather itself, has a cup of coffee, forget that it needs to flip the screen, returns from its coma, and then flips the screen. Almost every motion is slow and clumsy, like it belongs in the Special Olympics of smartphones…. Hey now, if BO can make a joke about special people, so can I.

I can continue my gripes about this phone if you’re not convinced that it sucks. I feel that youre convinced so I’ll stop now!
