I forgot to add this in my last post, but the third takeaway from Monga is that the theme song to the movie, Making Love Out of Nothing At All by Air Supply, reaffirms that 80′s soft rock is still kick ass. In the movie, the song is performed by 李玖哲 (Nicky Lee). Below is the original MV by AS.

Addendum: Another tie into Monga; Dad grew up in Wanhua.

Monga is a Taiwanese gangster movie set in Monga, or 萬華 (Wanhua), a district in Taipei. Set in the 80′s, Monga is a story of a gang of young hoodlums trying to figure out their place in the life of a Taiwanese gangster. There’s a lot of fighting, drinking, whoring, scheming, and wearing fancy flower print shirts, all of which are per the norm of the Taiwanese 黑 道 (literal translation is black road, but I think it means black society).

Coincidently, I’ve been living in the Wanhua district for the past month. Parts of the movie were shot on location in Wanhua, including the night market behind my place and the Longshan Temple next to the Longshan MTR stop that I use. Pronounced Báng-kah in Taiwanese, Wanhua, like in the movie, still has a red light district. Unlike the movie however, the red light district of now is dark, dank, and has a mix of beat up looking hookers and street peddlers selling stolen junk. There’s also a naked man who stands around waving his arms. You might want to stay away from parts of Wanhua if you ever visit Taiwan.

As for the movie, it’s OK. It was hard to understand the Taiwanese parts of the movie and some of the cultural things kind of flew by me. The ending was also a little too artsy and profound for my taste. In the end, I came away with two things. One, in certain angles, John does look like Mark Chao, the main actor in Monga, as some people have said. Two, I really need a flower dress shirt to complete my wardrobe. Nothing says bad ass G like one of those shirts.

While channel flipping the other day, I came across this Singaporean comedy called Just Follow Law. Having just visited Singapore, I took a quick interest in the film and lmao-ed to the end because Singlish amuses me, the Dilbert-esque comedy made me laugh, and Tanya Chew, played by Fann Wong, was oh-so easy on me eyes.

Needless to say, I liked the movie and so should you. There is at least one subject matter in the film, which touches on everything from family values, government, and work place issues, that everyone can relate to. I’m too tired to construct anymore sentences so I embedded a clip of the movie below. Looks like youtube has 13 more clips which could very well be the entire movie. Enjoy please!

When Tiff told me that she hadn’t seen the A-Team movie trailer yet, I felt that I needed to spread the word about what might be the biggest event since Obama’s inauguration. Seriously folks, set aside some time to watch the movie this summer. If you are an A-Team fan, this movie should be on your “things-to-do-before-I die-list”. If you’ve never heard of the A-Team, shame on you! Head on over to Hulu, catch a few episodes, and ask yourself why you lived for so long without knowing that if you have a problem, and no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire The A-Team.

DK is entertainment. 100% for sure like no kidding the BEST Batman ever known to man. It certainly lived up to all the hype and the $11 popcorn and soda. I left the theater wanting more even though the movie was 2.5 hours long.

I’m not sure what an ensemble cast means, but if it means team effort, than the characters played, or acted, as a team. Even though the movie is titled Dark Knight, the movie wasn’t just about Batman. It was about Batman, Jim Gordon, Rachel Dawes, Alfred, Luscious Fox, Two Face, and last but not least, the Joker. The movie couldn’t have done without any of the characters.

Some say that the Joker stole the show. Heath Ledger’s performance as the Joker was absolutely haunting and will go down as one of the best villains ever. I woke up last night because the Joker was running after me in my dreams, though it turned out to be Mochi clawing at my face. Prepare yourself this Halloween for all the yokels that will be donning Joker costumes and running around.

I’m trying to not examine the movie too much. It’s best to just let it be. So while I’m remaining ignorant to how Batman’s voice is still annoying, or how everytime he shoot’s a bomb it always lands right side up, or how Gotham looks like Chicago, DK gets a 10 out of 10. I can’t wait for the next one, though it’s going to be a monumental challenge to top DK. One can’t help but to wonder where Chris Nolan (director) can possibly go from here.

In the greatest pairing since Al Pacino and Robert Deniro in Heat, Jet Li and Jackie Chan come together in a kung fu supernova movie called the Forbidden Kingdom. The movie exceeded our expectations, partially because Vik battered them by telling us that the movie wasn’t very fresh on Rotten Tomato, but also because the movie put an interesting twist in the beginning. I certainly didn’t expect it, and you couldn’t tell from the trailers. The fight scenes were also awesome, and Jackie Chan’s comedic engrish delivery was on par, if not better than it was in Rush Hour. “Empty the cup”, LOL. Watch the movie and you’ll know what I mean. Hilarity. FK is a great movie to watch if you’re looking to be entertained. 4 out of 5.
