So I’ve been slowly pushing the idea of having Mochi spayed to TL ever since we got the little bear. Finally, after speaking with several doctors and dog trainers, TL conceded that Mochi should get the operation. There are several health benefits of getting a dog spayed/neutered. For bitches (it feels wrong using that word), the most obvious benefit is not having to be in heat twice a year. If you have never owned a female dog, let me tell you, it’s an uncomfortable two weeks not just for the dog, but for the owner(s) as well. Having her eggs and uterus ripped out also reduces the chance of Mochi getting cancer, or so they say.
We took bear to the vet this morning for her operation. As hard as TL tried, I don’t think she was able to tell Mochi what was going to happen. After checking in, we sat around for a while before being led into the spa-like operation waiting room; it had dim lighting, scented candles, and a nice cushy sofa. The nurses (I think they’re nurses too right?) took some blood from Mochi for tests and gave her the sleepy shot which promptly knocked Mochi out. The doc then took Mochi into the op room to get prepped.
We got to watch the entire procedure in the op room. Mochi was put on her back, her legs were tied down to the table and she had tubes sticking out of her mouth. There was a big clothes hanger pin looking thing that they clipped to her throat, along with four other alligator pins attached to each of her leg. The doc placed one of those blue surgical mats with a hole cut out over the area where he was going to perform the operation on top of Mochi. The doc was a nice guy, explaining every little thing he was doing. I asked a couple of questions but not too many so the doc could concentrate on what he was doing. The operation reminded me of the pig we dissected in bio in HS. The doc was cutting, pulling, slicing and dicing, and sewing a bunch of things together. I thought it would have been grosser but it was far from anything that would have been puke inducing. Hell, even TL stood through the entire thing without passing out, and she’s the squeamish type when it comes to blood and guts.
The op lasted about 20-30 minutes. It took Mochi about 15 minutes to wake up from the anesthesia. She was groggy, disoriented, and a few ounces lighter when she finally came around. Now she has to wear her lamp shade collar for the next few days which makes me laugh. She got me back by doing a double poop, a trick where she poops, I perform clean up duty, and then she poops again right after I come back from washing my hands, and then stares at me while I clean up her second gift. She thinks she so funny. What a b!
