It Doesn’t Pay to Cheat

A while back, a friend told me about these GMAT test prep sites that gave you GMAT questions from the actual GMAT tests. Not suprisingly, these prep sites are run by individuals from China who send in test takers that would either memorize or write down test questions and then sell them online.

Recently, the GMAC (GMAT officials) won a $2.3 mill judgment against one of these cheat sites called ScoreTop. The site’s operator, a Chinese national, is currently hiding in China as a fugitive. The FBI found his computer and is analyzing it for employee and customer info. The information will be given to the GMAC and any test takers found to have used ScoreTops service will have their test scores canceled, will be prohibited from taking the test again, and the schools the students sent their scores to will be notified. The Bschool will determine what their course of action will be in reprimanding the students that are caught. The punishment can range from a verbal beating to expulsion from the Bschool’s program. Doh!

I never considered using a cheat service such as ScoreTop. Besides the fact that using the questions would be unethical, the quality and value of the questions is also doubtful. For one thing, the GMAC no longer allows scratch paper. Instead, they give you a small whiteboard to do your scratch work so that you cannot take anything out of the test room with you. This means that the test takers ScoreTop sent in to copy the questions had to memorize the questions. Unless the test taker has a digital camera built into his eye, there is absolutely no way he can accurately memorize the questions on the test. Secondly, the GMAT has a huge database of questions to choose from. Even though this is a guess, the probability of one of the copied questions actually appearing on the real test is razor thin. If you really wanted to see real GMAT questions, buy the Official GMAT test prep book that contains retired GMAT questions.
