Kayak Fishing Seminar

Last night I went to a kayak fishing seminar at Action Watersports in Marina Del Rey. The presenter was Dick who owns a tackle shop up the street (forgot the name of the shop). Most of the presentation centered around what gear to use and how to stay safe. What I wanted to know was whether there was any good fishing to be had inside MDR harbor. The answer was yes.
Dick said that right now, and in August, is the BEST time for hunting white sea bass. Hard to believe, but you can actually catch them inside the harbor. Another good spot is the kelp beds around Malaga Cove. Dick also mentioned a couple of spots inside MDR that holds bass (spotted and calico). The spots are your typical harbor structures such as pier pilings and docks.
And to echo what Dick said, please catch and release the big ‘uns. They are the big egg producers. One of the guys said that a 32” halibut can lay over 30k eggs, whereas a 12” might lay just 5k. It’s OK to take one every now and then, but please let the breeders go if you ever want to fish in the future.
It was a good hour spent listening to Dick and this other guy talk about something that I haven’t done in two years. It’s definintely good news that MDR can be fished. Now I just have to figure out a way to get my yak stored closer to me so I can go.
